Schumann's three string quartets of Op. 41 and his Piano Quintet, Op. 44, are certainly not underrecorded, and simply getting the notes right results in a satisfying performance. However, recordings that delve deeper into the music, like this one from the Quatuor Hanson, are not so common. Even more than his symphonies, Schumann's chamber music fits classical genre models; they are some of the most Beethovenian works he ever wrote. Yet the emotional, highly subjective Schumann is still present. Consider the quotation from Beethoven's song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98, in the finale of the String Quartet in F major, Op. 41, No. 2, or the deeply somber introduction in the first movement of the String Quartet in A minor, Op. 41, No. 1. The Quatuor Hanson, more than most, strikes a balance between the subjective and objective elements in propulsive but expressive performances that are deeply satisfying to hear. The gathering momentum in the Scherzo of Op. 41, No. 2, is genuinely fresh. The Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, is a slightly different case. Here, the Quatuor Hanson is unusually skillful in weaving the piano into the string quartet fabric, making the work less a piano concerto with four strings and more a work that reflects the chamber music ideal of a discussion among equal partners. Pianist Adam Laloum joins the quartet in this performance, which reflects a lot of careful work. Harmonia Mundi's sound from the Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers is ideal, and this is a fresh, youthful Schumann chamber music album that succeeds on every level.
