Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747), Handel's main London rival, was discredited following a murky plagiarism scandal. This album’s release restored his glory, and is here recorded by the exceptional soloists and instrumentalists of the Choir of Queen's College Oxford and the Academy of Ancient Music, under the direction of Owen Rees. Bononcini was commissioned to write When Saul was King shortly after his arrival in London, a grand hymn to mark the Duke of Marlborough’s (his patron) opulent funeral. Powerful and solemn, it is hard to believe that such music has been ignored for so long. An injustice of history best explained by the powerful Handel’s long shadow. Recently edited from eighteenth-century sources, ‘Ave Maris Stella’, ‘Laudate pueri’ and the original version in D major of ‘Te Deum’ are all featured here for the first time. The grandiose ‘Te Deum’, last of Bononcini compositions, was commissioned from him by Queen Maria Theresa when he moved to Vienna at the end of his life. As prolific a composer as any from the time (with numerous operas, hymns and instrumental music) and in great demand throughout Europe, Giovanni Bononcini still remains largely undiscovered beyond his quarrels with his famous German counterpart.
