Tungsten
Duo formed in Chalmette, Louisiana, USA, a small town on the edge of New Orleans, in the early 90s. Al Hodge (guitar, bass, vocals) and Mark Talamo (drums, electronics) became friends in high school a decade previously, sharing interests in both traditional heavy metal and technology. However, unlike many of the groups caught in its nets by the diversity of the 90s, Tungsten were not afraid of the term metal: "There are so many bands out there that are almost embarrassed to say that. I'd rather be called a metal band than be a 60s hippie-wanna-be band that hails from the trend land of Seattle". Lyrically their debut articulated Hodge's frustrations with failed relationships and a sense of betrayal, particularly virulent on tracks such as "Born XY" or "Just Fades Away". It was recorded at Talamo's own 16-track digital studio, where he has also engineered albums for Crowbar and Down.
