Rajna Swaminathan
Rajna Swaminathan is a distinguished mrudangam artist, composer, and scholar known for her innovative contributions to music and academia. Hailed as a vital new voice, her work is both rigorous and accessible, intertwining rhythmic exploration with collective improvisation. Trained by her father and legendary Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Rajna Swaminathan has developed experimental approaches to the mrudangam, piano, and voice, contributing significantly to Karnatik music, South Asian film/popular music, and New York's jazz scene. Her ensemble RAJAS showcases her expansive compositions, blending rhythmic, textural, and modal elements. Rajna Swaminathan's debut album with RAJAS received critical acclaim, and her recent release, Apertures (2023), further cements her artistic vision. An Assistant Professor at UC Irvine, she holds a PhD from Harvard University, integrating her musical studies with scholarly inquiry into diasporic creativity and ethics.
