OneFour
The chest-thumping group at the forefront of Australian rap, Sydney's ONEFOUR were the pioneers of Australia's burgeoning drill scene, putting their own spin on the sounds that had dominated England's capital in the late 2010s.
Comprised of members Spenny (Spencer Magologo), JEmz (Jerome Misa), YP (Pio Misa), Celly (Dachell Ramos), and Lekks (Salec Sua), rap outfit ONEFOUR emerged from Sydney's Mount Druitt suburb in 2017, debuting with the gloomy trap sonics of "Don't Want It." Though the group had paid homage to the U.K. with their debut single, further singles saw them synthesize greater influences from London's dominant drill scene: "Ready for War" acted as a rough interpolation of the Harlem Spartans' "Call Me a Spartan," and "What You Know" incorporated the genre's gang-centric visuals and skittish flows. By 2019, the group had begun to re-shape drill in their own vision; after kicking off the year with the brutal "Shanks and Shivs," ONEFOUR pushed their sound to international audiences with breakout track "The Message." Co-produced by Gotcha and Pulse Beats, "The Message" imbued U.K. drill's frosty sonics with the blunt-force bombast of the Aussie rap scene, garnering millions of views online and coining the group's now-iconic "Retaliation is a must, ain't no maybe, ifs or buts." With their identity stamped onto the genre, ONEFOUR quickly landed another massive success with June's "Spot the Difference," a faster-paced anthem with rapid-fire flows, shuddering showmanship, and a seemingly endless list of quotable lyrics -- "How can I call them opps? They run off and leave their friends for dead, more like a bunch of dogs." The group closed out 2019 with the weighty trap of "Ladz in the Hood," the swinging drill of "Ben 10," and the gothic brag-rap of "In the Beginning." Disaster struck in December, however, when YP, Lekks, and Celly were sentenced to various stints in jail. Through 2020, JEmz and Spenny found success with international collaborators as well as work with A$AP Ferg ("Say It Again"), Headie One ("Ain't It Different Remix"), and Dutchavelli ("Better"), the group landed a spot alongside a host of drill talents on Tweeko and Sebz' "The Coldest Link Up, Pt. 2." The roll-out for their debut EP began with defiant single "Home and Away," shortly followed by "My City," an homage to Sydney alongside local talent the Kid LAROI. The EP Against All Odds was released in November 2020; venturing into Afroswing and melodic trap, the project offered a sampling of new threads, classic drill anthems, and tributes to the group's incarcerated members.
