Mombojó
Mombojó was formed in Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco, in 2001 by the bandmembers Felipe S (vocals), Chiquinho (keyboard, sampler), Marcelo Campello (acoustic guitar, cavaquinho), Marcelo Machado (electric guitar), Rafa (flute), Samuel (bass), and Vicente Machado (percussion). Already in 2002 the teenage band drew the attention of Brazil's top music critics, such as Sílvio Essinger, and threw their inspired performances on music events and festivals in Recife. The band then recorded and released its first CD, Nadadenovo. Mixing radio-friendly rock with bossa nova, lounge, surf music, jazz, psychedelics, and samba, the CD was very much appreciated and praised in the media. The mature sound, artistic integrity, and complex melodies of the band was very impressive, especially considering how young the bandmembers still were. Nadadenovo immediately and deservedly lent Mombojó the fame as one of Brazil's most exciting and promising rock acts. The expectations were therefore very high on Mombojó's second album, Homem Espuma, released in 2006 by the hip record label Trama. Although not as strong as Nadadenovo, it helped establish Mombojó as one of Brazil's most unique-sounding and interesting bands.
