John Summit
As his sound evolved from slick, rolling tech-house to more melodic, vocal-driven house, Chicago-based John Summit emerged as a major figure in the dance music world, appearing at countless festivals and producing several top-selling and heavily streamed tracks. Releasing music since the late 2010s, he broke through with the infectious 2020 song "Deep End," and found further success with tracks like "Human" (featuring Echoes), the Sofi Tukker collaboration "Sun Came Up," and "La Danza." He formed the label and event brand Off the Grid in 2022 and released additional tracks such as "Revolution." He scored one of his biggest hits with the 2023 anthem "Where You Are," and followed it with the trance single "Fade Out."
John Walter Schuster took piano lessons as a child, and got into electronic music after he attended Lollapalooza and started sneaking into clubs and after-parties. He learned to produce and DJ while an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois and began releasing music as John Summit around 2017. After issuing digital tracks for a few years, he focused on making music full-time. His persistence paid off when "Deep End" was released by Defected in 2020, racking up major online sales and streaming numbers. Several more tracks followed in 2021, including "Thin Line" (with Guz), "Make Me Feel," and "Sun Came Up" (with Sofi Tukker). "Human" (featuring Echoes) was released by FFRR near the end of the year, and subsequently became a radio hit. Summit returned to Defected with 2020's "La Danza," and launched his Off the Grid label with "In Chicago." He also remixed "Escape" by Kx5 (the duo of deadmau5 and Kaskade) and "Freeze" by Kygo. "What a Life" (with Guz featuring Stevie Appleton), "Show Me" (featuring Hannah Boleyn), and "Revolution" followed. At the end of 2022, Summit was named Artist of the Year by dance website EDM Train. "Where You Are," a progressive house anthem featuring vocalist Hayla, appeared in 2023 and quickly became one of Summit's most heavily streamed songs. "Fade Out," a progressive trance tune with MKLA, was issued the same year.
