John-Allison Weiss
Known for their gritty, melodic indie pop songwriting, John-Allison Weiss emerged at the end of the 2000s as an early crowd-funding hero with a strong D.I.Y. ethos that has defined them throughout their career. After establishing themselves among the punk underground, they became a staple of the Warped Tour and released highly rated albums like 2013's Say What You Mean and 2015's New Love. Touring alongside peers like Laura Jane Grace, Matt Pryor, and the Front Bottoms, Weiss has also collaborated as a songwriter with artists including Tegan Quin and Kevin Devine. Following a live album and 2021's Death Valley Demos EP, they signed with Get Better Records and issued the single "Different Now."
Weiss began playing music as a teenager in their hometown of Flowery Branch, Georgia. Inspired by pop-punk music and the emotional tumult of young relationships, they began writing folk-inspired pop-punk songs of their own, adopting a D.I.Y. ethic that would stay with them throughout their career. Their first EP, An Eight-Song Tribute to Feeling Bad and Feeling Better, appeared in 2007, followed by a full-length concert album, Live at Sidewalk NYC, a year later. In late 2009, after two more EPs, the savvy Weiss executed a massively successful crowd-funding campaign on the newly launched Kickstarter platform. Not only were they able to fund their debut studio album, ...Was Right All Along, but the experience led to some high-exposure press, with The New York Times and Wired magazine essentially labeling them as a sort of poster child for the new era of Internet promotion. Weiss capitalized on the attention with countless tours, interviews, and even a panelist slot at the industry's SXSW conference in Austin. They remained busy over the next two years releasing more EPs and a single, focusing on their songwriting and touring. A second crowd-funding effort allowed them to complete their second studio album, Say What You Mean, as well as a companion acoustic record called Sideways Sessions. In 2013 Weiss signed with No Sleep Records, which released both albums later that year. Featuring production from Hellogoodbye's Forrest Kline and Now, Now's Bradley Hale, their third studio LP, New Love, appeared in 2015 on Los Angeles pop-punk stalwart SideOneDummy Records.
In 2019, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album, Weiss recorded a live in-studio concert album titled ...Still Right All Along. Over the next few years, they continued to issue smaller releases like 2021's Death Valley Demos and the 2022 single "Different Now."
