Iwa K

The Indonesian hip-hop artist Iwa Kusuma, aka Iwa K, was born in Bandung, West Java in 1970 and has become a legend within Indonesian hip-hop.

He began his career whilst still a teenager during the late 1980s, and in 1992 he went on to become the first Indonesian rapper to release a full-length album, titled 'Kuingin Kemball'. Around this time, he became the de facto leader of what became known as the Cinere Posse, a group of young rappers who form the bulk of Indonesia's hip-hop performers and who took their lead from Kusuma.

To encourage young Indonesian rappers Kusuma and his manager Masaru Riupassa hosted a rap competition at the Jakarta Hilton to help spotlight emerging talent. Winners were invited to participate in an album and the first of these, 'Pesta Rap 1', sold over 270,000 copies.

With five solo albums to his credit, the final one being 'Vini Vidi Vunky' released in 2002, Kusuma can rightfully claim to be one of the founding fathers of the Indonesian hip-hop movement.
