Gold Connections

An indie rock project that marries rough D.I.Y. surfaces with simple but artfully intelligent songs, Gold Connections is the brainchild of Virginia-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Will Marsh. A frequent collaborator with Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo, Marsh earned national attention on the Fat Possum label with his Toledo-produced 2017 EP before expanding his sound with the 2018 full-length Popular Fiction. After several years of smaller releases on the Egghunt label, he founded his own imprint in 2020 and released the Ammunition EP. Marsh took up the guitar at a young age and began writing songs when he was 12 years old. After playing in a few garage bands during high school, he enrolled at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he immersed himself in indie rock and began writing and recording new songs. Marsh also became involved in the college's student radio station, WCWM, where he met fellow student Toledo in 2014. Over the next couple of years, the two became fast friends and collaborators with Marsh playing for a while in Toledo's band, Car Seat Headrest, and Toledo playing in Marsh's newly formed Gold Connections project. With Toledo recording, producing, and playing several on the instruments on Gold Connections' debut EP, Marsh managed to secure a deal with Fat Possum Records. The label released the 2016 single "Icarus," followed a year later by Gold Connections' eponymous Toledo-produced EP. Moving away from his lo-fi beginnings, Marsh began recording his next release at indie pop icon Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina. Released by Egghunt Records, 2018's Popular Fiction LP didn't necessarily do away with Gold Connections' ragged edges, but expanded the scope of Marsh's capabilities, and he followed up in a similar vein with 2019's Like a Shadow EP. Basing his operations out of Richmond, Marsh launched his own label, Desert Land Records, and released his next EP, Ammunition, in November 2020.
