Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra
The Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra has risen to national prominence in Brazil by featuring Brazilian music, much of it lesser-known, in its programming and recordings. That artistic trend has continued under conductor Neil Thomson, who has instituted a vigorous recording program with the group.
The Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra (in Portuguese: Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás) is a musical ensemble under the aegis of the government of Goiás, a state in west-central Brazil. The orchestra was formed in 1980 by conductor Braz de Pina Filho. From the beginning, the group aimed to emphasize music by Brazilian composers and at the broader democratization of musical programming this effort represented. For some years, the group had a mostly regional reputation, but a major reorganization in 2012 entailed an attempt to bring national attention to the orchestra. Conductor Neil Thomson was hired as a result, stepping onto the podium in 2014. He remained in that position as of the mid-2020s. Some regard the orchestra as one of the top three in Brazil.
The programming of the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra is not restricted to Brazilian music exclusively; the group has given the South American premieres of such major modernist works as Olivier Messiaen's Des canyons aux étoiles, Pierre Boulez's Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna, and Luigi Nono's Como una ola de fuerza y luz. Its recording program, however, has been focused on Brazilian composition. That program began in the year 2022 with a recording of symphonies by Claudio Santoro. That album, recorded at the Centro Cultural Oscar Niemeyer in Goiânia, Brazil, appeared on the Naxos label, which has continued to feature the orchestra's recording in its "Music of Brazil" series. The Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra has recorded further entries in Santoro's catalog of 14 symphonies, as well as works by César Guerra-Peixe and Edino Krieger. The orchestra released an album featuring Guerra-Peixe's A Retirada de Laguna on Naxos in 2024. Future plans included video recordings of a complete cycle of Haydn symphonies.
