François-Frédéric Guy
Pianist François-Frédéric Guy has specialized in the music of Beethoven but also has a strong commitment to contemporary music, giving the premieres of several new works. He has appeared as a concerto soloist or recitalist in many of Europe's major concert halls.
Guy was born in Vernon, in Normandy, on January 23, 1969. Guy's father was an amateur pianist, and the young Guy began to imitate him and made unexpectedly rapid progress. He enrolled at the Conservatoire de Paris at age 11 and studied with Dominique Merlet and Christian Ivaldi, graduating in 1980. Prizes, including a first special jury prize at the Munich Piano Competition in 1989 and first prize and an interpretation prize at the Unisa Competition in Pretoria, South Africa, boosted his career. In 1994, he was invited to the Lake Como Foundation and met and was influenced by a variety of major performers, including Charles Rosen, Murray Perahia, and Karl Ulrich Schnabel, son of Viennese legend Artur Schnabel. In 1999, Guy made his debut, performing with the Orchestre de Paris. In 2005, he made his recording debut, backing clarinetist Romain Guyot on a Harmonia Mundi recording of Brahms' clarinet sonatas. His solo debut came three years later on the same label, with a recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 in B flat major, Op. 106 ("Hammerklavier"), and Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109.
Beethoven would become a major focus of Guy's career. He performed the composer's 32 sonatas in recital series at the Berlioz Festival of La Côte-Saint-André and in Rio de Janeiro and recorded them for the Zig Zag Territoires label. Guy has appeared with major orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tonhalle-Orchester in Zürich, and he served as artist-in-residence at the Arsenal Concert Hall in Metz, France. He makes regular appearances with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and the Radio-France Philharmonic Orchestra. Guy is a favorite on the festival circuit, appearing at the Festival de La Roque d'Anthéron, the Printemps des arts de Monte Carlo, and the Beethovenfest in Bonn, Germany, among many others. In addition to mainstream Germanic repertory, he performs contemporary music enthusiastically and has premiered works by Éric Tanguy, Hugues Dufourt, and Bruno Mantovani, among others. Guy recorded several albums of Beethoven and Brahms for the Naïve label in the 2000s decade. Since then, he has recorded for Zig Zag Territoires, Chandos, Evidence Classics, and Alpha, among other labels, moving to La Dolce Volta in 2022 for an album of music by Debussy and Tristan Murail. His album Chopin: Secret Garden appeared on the same label in 2023.
