Frances Yip

Cantopop singer Francis Yip was born Francis Yip Lai-yee in Hong Kong on October 22, 1947. While known for her Cantopop recordings, she has also recorded pop music and Mandarin hits in English. She’s best-known for singing themes to Hong Kong TV series in the 1980s and 1990s. She began her professional singing career in 1969 after winning the televised talent show Sharp’s Night Four Lights Competition. She met composer Joseph Koo, who had her sing commercial jingles before she released her debut single “Bu Liao Qing.” After working as an Ambassador of Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Tourism Board, she recorded the album Discover (1974) - which was inspired by her extensive travels - in nine different languages. The album’s release led to her signing with EMI Records in London, a relationship that she has maintained for close to five decades. Subsequent EMI releases include English language albums such as And the Sun Will Shine (1975), Something Old, Something New (1976), Take My Love (1977), and You Needed Me (1979). Throughout her career, she has also sung in Tagalog, Japanese, Spanish, Thai, Mandarin, Cantonese, Indonesian, and many other languages. While her recording career slowed down in the 1980s and 1990s, she had a resurgence in her career when she sang many TV themes for Hong Kong television including her signature song “The Bund,” which was the theme to the 1980 series of the same name. In 2012, she released her first Christian album, Grace and Glory Psalm 84. With a career that includes over 80 albums, there are many hits compilations that focus on her early career pre-EMI Records career as well as several major label compilations including EMI Lovely Legend – Francis Yip (2009), which includes “Shang Hai Tan,” “Wan Ban Qing,” “Ming Ri Hua Jin Tian,” and many others.
