Enno Poppe

Enno Poppe is a contemporary German conductor and one of the leading composers of his generation. His style as a composer, which he describes as having a bent or dented nature, utilizes modern concepts such as micro-tonal pitches, mathematical themes, and pre-programmed synthesizers. He was born in Hemer, Germany in 1969, and had an early fascination with music -- he was able to read orchestral scores by the time he was 11 years old. Later he studied composition and conducting with Friedrich Goldmann and Gösta Neuwirth at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. He pursued additional studies in sound synthesis and algorithmic composition at Technische Universität, Berlin, followed by lessons with Heinrich Taube at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe. After he completed his education in the early '90s, he began receiving grants to compose from the Berlin Senate. It was around this time he composed 17 Etudes for violin, Book 2, Thema mit 840 Variationen for guitar, and Gelöschte Lieder, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello & piano. In 1998 he became the musical director and conductor of ensemble mosaik, which specializes in performing his works and those of other contemporary composers. Additionally, he conducts Klangforum Wien and musikFabrik. Also an educator, Poppe taught at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" from 2002 to 2004, and he gave masterclasses at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse from 2004 to 2010. He has also taught at the Impuls Akademie in Graz, Austria, and is a member of several academic societies, including the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste, and the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste. Some of his more important works from the 2000s include Interzone, and Arbeit Nahrung Wohnung: Bühnenmusik, which were both collaborations with librettist Marcel Beyer. In the 2010s he continued composing, teaching masterclasses, and many of his works were premiered. Speicher was given its U.S. premiere by the Talea Ensemble, and the viola concerto Filz was performed by Tabea Zimmermann with ensemble resonanz. Filz, along with Stoff and Wald, were recorded on the 2021 release Enno Poppe: Filz. As a conductor, Poppe also appeared on the album Rebecca Saunders: Skin, released in 2022.
