Georges Dor

French-Canadian singer-songwriter and poet Georges Dor was born on September 10, 1931, in the city of Drummondville. Growing up in a blue-collar family, he began his adult life by working at a factory while attending École du Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montréal. In the 1950s, he served as a disc jockey and news director for a local radio station, later landing a job at CHLN in Trois-Rivières and eventually becoming the director for the evening news at Radio-Canada. During this time, he also published a collection of poems titled Éternelles Saisons. He launched his music career in the early 1960s after participating in an amateur singing competition, making his official debut in 1966 with his eponymous LP. One of the songs from the album, "La Manic," struck a chord with Quebecois audiences thanks to its socially committed lyrics, which were written as a love letter from a construction worker on the Manicouagan power project. The song catapulted the chansonnier to stardom and won the Felix Leclerc award at the 1968 Festival du Disques, becoming one of the most popular entries in the Quebecois songbook. Georges Dor continued releasing albums throughout the 1970s, most notably 1972's Au Ralenti, which included the hit single "Pour la Musique." In the following decades, he devoted himself to writing, producing several stage plays and soap operas, as well as essays and novels. On July 24, 2001, Georges Dor passed away in Montreal after struggling with lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy as one of Quebec's most beloved cultural icons. Some of his most well-known songs have been included in compilations such as Georges Dor - Québec Love (1996), Un Homme Libre (2006), Maudit Pays (2007), and Collection Sovenir: Saint-Germain (2013).
