Dead Soft

Dead Soft emerged out of British Columbia's indie underground in the early part of the 2010s, creating heavy, fuzzed-out rock with an introspective streak and inherent melodic sense. From their roots on a small island in the Inside Passage to a later deal with prominent Toronto label Arts + Crafts, Dead Soft have shown a steadfast resolve and D.I.Y. spirit, crisscrossing the country on countless tours and releasing a series of respected EPs and a 2014 full-length. Issued in 2019, their second LP, Big Blue, marked a subtle tonal shift and was their first widely visible release. Nathaniel Epp (vocals, guitar) and Keeley Rochon (bass, vocals) first began making music together as teenagers in the fishing port of Prince Rupert on Kaien Island. A love of Canadian '90s indie rock and American artists like Elliott Smith and the Replacements fueled the duo's early songs, and when they moved south to Victoria, they officially formed Dead Soft in 2011. After a self-titled EP and 2012 cassette release, they relocated again to Vancouver and played as a three-piece with drummer Graeme McDonald. They made their full-length debut in 2014 with a self-titled album on Vancouver indie Kingfisher Bluez, and spent a significant amount of time on the road. After a 2016 single, "The Wind," on Infinity Cat Recordings, Dead Soft inked a deal with Arts + Crafts, home to prominent Canadian indie acts like Stars, Broken Social Scene, and Timber Timbre. Their first outing for the label was 2018's New Emotion EP, which doubled down on their increasingly melodic power pop tendencies. They followed it up a year later with the full-length Big Blue, which expanded on the heavy fuzz-pop feel while thematically celebrating personal change.
