范曉萱

Taiwanese singer-songwriter, actress, and director, Mavis Fan, was born on February 27, 1977, in Taipei, Taiwan. Raised solely by her mother following her parents' separation, Fan's musical journey commenced early, learning the flute and piano from the age of three while her mother performed in bars to afford her tuition at Taiwan's premier music school. Stepping onto the stage at 14, Fan was initially presented as a youthful persona, with her albums featuring children's songs, garnering exceptional sales and earning her the moniker "Little Witch of Music." After a string of wildly successful albums like Rain (1995) and Darling (1998), it was her 1999 release, I Want Us To Be Together, that marked a shift to adult contemporary music. While not a commercial triumph, it earned critical acclaim, securing accolades at the 11th Taiwan Gold Melody Awards. Subsequent releases displayed Fan's versatility, from the lounge-inspired Jue Shi Ming Ling (2001) to the collaborative effort Is There Another Way (2003) with Chinese producer Lin Weizhe, spotlighting stripped-back vocals and piano arrangements. In 2007, Fan formed Fan Xiaoxuan & 100% Band, unveiling the rock-oriented albums Breakthrough (2007) and Chizi (2009), earning her the Best Single Producer Award, her first in a decade, at the Golden Melody Awards. After focusing on her acting career, performing in films such as Lover’s Discourse (2010), Joy Division (2013) and Heartfall Arises (2016), Fan returned to her roots in 2023, collaborating with Evelyn Chang on Fantasies for Children Musical Stories in April. Her 1996 track "Snowman" experienced a resurgence in December, reappearing on the Chinese Top 100 charts at number 47.
