Pulse, das erste Album von Braxton für Atlantic, erschien mit über einjähriger Verspätung, weil Material durchgesickert war, sodass die Sängerin gezwungen war, mehrere neue Songs einzuspielen. Die übrigen Gemeinschaftsproduktionen mit berühmten Künstlern heben den Schnitt jedoch auch nicht. Aber selbst wenn die geringen Erwartungen berücksichtigt werden, ist Pulse absolut überzeugend. Es ist viel Überzeugung spürbar, die nicht ins Schwanken gerät, was angesichts der Tatsache, dass das Album so viele Phasen einer Liebesbeziehung abdeckt, besonders beeindruckend ist. Nur wenige andere können wie Braxton so kraftvolles, radikal gegensätzliches Material abliefern, jedenfalls nicht im Rahmen eines 40-minütigen Albums. Ein paar Balladen sind musikalisch halbherzig und textlich Phrasendrescherei, aber selbst dann noch ist das Album die bei weiten beste Arbeit der Sängerin seit The Heat.
