Although presumably recorded at the same Elvis Costello-produced sessions which yielded the brilliant Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, the four-song Poguetry in Motion EP is hardly a collection of leftovers -- in fact, the material ranks alongside the Pogues' very best efforts. The opener "London Girl" is one of Shane McGowan's most simple and heartfelt love songs, rendered with infectious energy and abandon, while "Rainy Night in Soho" perfectly captures the nocturnal beauty implicit in its title -- a lovely piano ballad complete with a sweeping string arrangement, it's a clear precursor to future classics like "A Fairytale of New York." As for side two, "The Body of an American" owes the most to the Pogues' past, from its whiskey-soaked narrative to its traditional (albeit raucous) Celtic folk approach; the closer, "Planxty Noel Hill," is the only throwaway, an instrumental romp likely recorded with McGowan on the floor, passed out in a pool of his own sick.
