‘New Ways’ is the 2019 offering by Canadian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk. Following 2017’s ‘Twin Solitude’ this record is a raw and poignant take on ‘tenderness, violence, sex and rebirth’ (Secret City Publishing Inc.). Evoking feelings of profound melancholy, loneliness and isolation ‘New Ways’ finds a new audience in a world ravaged by a global virus. The album highlights ‘Hot Tears’ and ‘Never Be Back’ are blissful. The former is a powerful piano ballad carried by Vollebekk’s mesmerising vocals and the latter, a rhythmically dense piece featuring a fast spoken word performance by the Canadian national. The mixing on this record is exemplary, with a tight production and excellent tonal balance. Engineers Chris Allen and Chris Shaw really deliver on this project, making for a pleasurable listening experience. All in all, this is what music should be: raw emotion, fantastic production quality, all wrapped up in an emotive musical journey. An excellently precise and tasteful record!
