Dabei wird er textlich manchmal so richtig cheeky: "Kennedy got it in a Lincoln, Caesar got it in the back, somebody told me Hank Williams died in his Cadillac", singt Isaak in "Down In Flames", und weiter: "Everybody's gotta go sometime / Sooner or later they'll call your name / I don’t know yet but I'm willing to bet I'm going down in flames".

Zurück im Heartbreak-Hotel: "Don't know why she's gone / Don’t know why she's gone away / Don't know what went wrong, so wrong", lamentiert er im Opener "First Comes The Night". First comes the night / Then comes the night / First comes the heartache, darling / It ain't always gonna hurt this way".

"I don't want you to forgive me", schleudert er der Verflossenen entgegen, "please don't call, we'll only start again". "We won't change / so why should we pretend", singt er im genannten Song. Passt genau, Chris.

Top.

Die Songtitel sprechen eh schon Bände: "Every Night I Miss You More", "Baby What Do You Want Me To Do", "Dry Your Eyes", "The Girl That Broke My Heart", "2Love The Way You Kiss Me". Großes und perfektioniertes Schwerenötertum, wohlfeiles Handwerk.

Chris Isaak bleibt konsequent zwanzig. Anachronismus ist das keiner: "I hang on because I love you", singt er. Und dann, am Ende, dann schüttelt er noch mal einen grandiosen Song wie "Love The Way You Kiss Me" aus dem Ärmel. Der Mann an der Bassgeige spielt Wechselbegleitung, "Uhhh-Ahh-Ahh" doowoppen die Backing Vocals und Isaak? Der mag's einfach, wie du ihn küsst: "When I close my eyes I got you back again".
