Text in englischer Sprache verfügbar

In the years of Leonard Bernstein, who was one of the teachers of Jaap van Zweden, a new release by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra was a newsworthy event. The reasons why that is no longer true are complex, but arguably boil down to a decision to follow fashions rather than cultivate the right talent. The latest candidate to steer the ship is Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden, fresh off an acclaimed music directorship in Dallas. These live Beethoven recordings were made in 2015, during stints that presumably served as auditions for the conductor. They offer both hope and testimony to the long road ahead. These are Beethoven recordings in the George Szell mold, even if the Philharmonic is in a league at this point with Szell's crisp Cleveland Orchestra: they are light, studious in their avoidance of bombast and sentiment, and most at home where a small detail can push the music in a new direction. Sample either one of the slow movements, which are full of rhythmic twists and a kind of mystery. In the outer movements, van Zweden follows the same kind of approach, cultivating transparent textures: he doesn't let you forget the horns are there, and their big appearances have a new sense here. If you're a New Yorker whose perception of these works was shaped by Leonard Bernstein, you're going to find these readings dry and perhaps off-putting, but the good news is that van Zweden is forging a sound of his own; that is what's needed, and one will see how it develops. He is not aided by mushy sound from the Philharmonic's engineering team, working at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.

Panorama-Artikel...

Fatma Said - "So bin ich"
