Shermanology
Formed in 2009 and drawing on inspiration from Motown, U.K. garage, and their upbringing on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao, this tech-house act comprises brother and sister DJs, producers, and vocalists Andy and Dorothy Sherman.
Alongside their uncles, their father Tony performed in the '70s funk and soul act the Sherman Brothers (not to be confused with Disney's staff songwriters of the same name). It became routine for Andy and Dorothy to watch their family prepare for performances and this motivated them to get involved in music. Although the pair were born on the Netherlands mainland, they spent six years on Curaçao, mostly during their teenage years. By 2001, they were singing Motown covers alongside their father, and their cousin Leon at holiday venues on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Representatives of U.K. garage stars Artful Dodger witnessed one of these shows and offered Andy the chance to replace Craig David as the band's vocalist for their live engagements. Andy duly accepted and spent the next two years touring the U.K., even appearing on the Artful Dodger single "Midnight Lover." Although this period provided him with valuable experience, he developed career aspirations beyond the promotion of someone else's act and decided to move back to the Netherlands. On his return, he wrote to the Dutch DJ Fedde Le Grand, who ultimately offered him some time in his studio. In 2008, Dorothy and Andy guested with Le Grand and Funkerman on the single "3 Minutes to Midnight," bringing the duo precious exposure on the Dutch underground scene.
An initial incarnation of Shermanology included their cousin Leon as a vocalist, but by 2011 he had left the group. During their time as a trio, they enjoyed a 2009 Belgian Dance Chart hit, "Automatic," once again in collaboration with Funkerman. In 2011, they were featured on Tom Hangs' Dutch hit "Blessed," and the following year on "Can't Stop Me" -- a joint single with Afrojack -- that reached the Top Ten. As they settled into life as a duo, Shermanology played to their strengths, with Andy focusing on production, while Dorothy's strong, gospel-inspired vocals were pushed to the forefront. For the remainder of the 2010s they were prolific in their singles output, releasing three or four a year, for numerous labels. 2015 brought their debut EP, The Phylosophy, released on Dirty Soul, and they closed the decade with "Move Out of My Way", a hard-hitting retro house single which indicated the future direction of the band.
Two further Shermanology EPs were issued in 2020 -- Soldier March and Bob Bini -- the latter of which was released on Jamie Jones' Hot Creations and received airplay in the U.K. on BBC Radio 1. The following year, their self-released "Boy N Da Club" brought additional plays from the same station, creating further exposure for their 2021 EPs 2031 and Calle.
