Mind & Matter
Mind & Matter were a soul and funk band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formed during the '70s, they're most notable for featuring a young James Harris before the keyboardist, songwriter, and arranger became known as Jimmy Jam of the Time, and as one-half of sovereign R&B production duo Jam & Lewis. With roots in acts such as the Casanovas, Wars of Armageddon (which featured Harris and longtime creative partner Terry Lewis), and Paradise, Mind & Matter self-released a 7" single inspired by Philly soul, "I'm Under Your Spell" b/w "Sunshine Lady," in 1977. The band, whose membership swelled to 11 instrumentalists and singers, gigged around the Midwest and opened for Pleasure, Faze-O, and Brass Construction, but they broke up in 1980. In October 2013, Numero issued 1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement), a compilation of sessions recorded at the home of vocalist Lawrence Brown. Shortly after that, Numero released the compilation Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound, which contained both sides of the 1977 single, along with material from the likes of 94 East, Harris and Lewis' Flyte Tyme, André Cymone, and Alexander O'Neal.
