Josh Cohen
One of North America's leading Baroque trumpeters, Joshua Cohen is in demand among early music ensembles across the continent. He is the principal Baroque trumpeter with the Washington Bach Consort.
Cohen, who generally goes by the name Josh, is a native of the Washington, D.C., area. His interest in performing early music got started when, at the age of seven or eight, he and his father listened to a radio documentary about Renaissance instruments hosted by historical performance pioneer David Munrow. As an undergraduate, Cohen attended the New England Conservatory of Music, studying with Baroque trumpeter Fred Holmgren. He went on to McGill University in Montreal, studying with players of other instruments besides the trumpet: Chantal Rémillard (Baroque violin), Claire Guimond (Baroque flute), Hank Knox (harpsichord), and Washington McClain (Baroque oboe). After earning a master's degree from McGill, Cohen has maintained his ties in Montreal's vibrant Baroque scene, performing and recording with Ensemble Caprice, the Studio Musique Ancienne de Montréal, Ensemble Telemann, and Arion.
One of the few Baroque trumpeters active in the U.S., Cohen also soon found himself in demand among Baroque ensembles there. He has performed as soloist with Aston Magna in Boston (with which he was heard on a 2004 Bach cantata recording), the Bach Sinfonia in Washington, and the Houston Bach Society, among other groups; he has served for more than a decade as principal Baroque trumpet with the Washington Bach Consort. Cohen has been heard at festivals, including the Indiana Festival of Early Music, the Bach Festival of Montreal, and the Festival of Baroque Music at Lameque in New Brunswick, Canada. He has been heard on various ensemble recordings, mostly in Canada, and in 2022, he released his debut album, Altissima: Works for High Baroque Trumpet, on the Chaconne label; he was backed on the album by Ensemble Sprezzatura.
