Bruno Bavota
As he's received greater recognition, Italian composer and multi-instrumentalist Bruno Bavota's music has gradually become bolder and more experimental while retaining the emotional directness that has shaped his work from the beginning. First appearing with the pristine neo-romantic piano and cello pieces of Il Pozzo d'Amor (2010), his subsequent albums such as Out of the Blue (2016) and Get Lost (2019) have incorporated expanded instrumentation as well as more atmospheric production, placing importance on the environment surrounding the instruments as well as the melodies. 2021's For Apartments: Songs & Loops contained solo piano pieces as well as progressive synthesizer explorations.
Born in 1984, Bavota started out playing acoustic guitar before concentrating on piano as his main instrument. His self-released debut, 2010's Il Pozzo d'Amor, consisted of straightforward, poignant piano compositions with some cello playing by Fabrizia Nicolosi. La Casa Sulla Luna, released in 2013 by Italian label Lizard, featured cellist Marco Pescosolido and violinist Paolo Sasso, and The Secret of the Sea, issued the same year by Psychonavigation, included some guitar-based compositions and more spacious production. Mediterraneo, released in 2015 by Moscow-based label Dronarivm, continued exploring the nautical theme of his previous album.
By the time the more atmospheric Out of the Blue appeared in 2016, Bavota's songs had received wider exposure through inclusion in advertisements, soundtracks, and high-profile streaming play lists. The digital compilation Selected Works was released by 1631 Recordings that year, while vinyl-only collection Impression was issued by Afrakà in 2017. In early 2019, after signing with Temporary Residence, Bavota released RE_CORDIS. Recorded during a single afternoon at a friend's studio, the album consisted of one-take performances of previously issued compositions (plus a newer one), utilizing effects pedals and processors. Get Lost appeared later in the year, further exploring these techniques in the context of a proper studio album.
While isolated at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bavota explored numerous ideas, recording expansive pieces for synthesizers and outboard effects processors, dubbed "Apartment Loops," and intimate piano compositions, or "Apartment Songs." He charted his progress with several EPs, then presented the double album For Apartments: Songs & Loops in 2021.
