Brad Goode
Multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, bass, drums) Brad Goode was born in 1963 in Chicago. He began learning violin at the age of four, switching to guitar and cornet seven years later, and by the time he graduated from high school he was already playing professional gigs as a bassist and trumpet player. Goode studied with trumpeter Vince DiMartino at the University of Kentucky, earning his undergraduate degree from there in 1985, and then studied double bass with Larry Gray at DePaul University, leaving with a master's degree in 1987. Although he has played professionally as both a bassist and a drummer, Goode is best known for his work on the trumpet, and has led his own jazz combos as well as playing with the likes of Red Rodney, Jack DeJohnette, Al Cohn, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Harris, Frank Morgan, and many others. He has taught at several schools, including the American Conservatory of Music, Cuyahoga Community College, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. His early albums lean toward a straight-ahead post-bop sound and include Shock of the New (Delmark, 1989) and Brad Goode (Sunlight, 1995). Goode continued in the post-bop and standards vein on Toy Trumpet (Steeplechase, 2001), By Myself (Steeplechase, 2001), Hypnotic Suggestion (Delmark, 2006), Nature Boy (Delmark, 2007), and Tight Like This (Delmark, 2010). A versatile artist, Goode delved into fusion and electronic-influenced sounds on 2008's Polytonal Dance Party (Origin). In 2013, Goode returned to this forward-thinking take on fusion jazz with Chicago Red (Origin). The following year, he delivered the expansive post-bop and Latin-infused Montezuma.
