Alexander Panfilov
Pianist Alexander Panfilov is one of the most promising of the Russian pianists who have established themselves in Britain in the 2010s. A versatile artist with a concerto repertory running from the Baroque to the contemporary era, Panfilov has been successful as a concert artist in both Eastern and Western Europe, as well as Britain.
Panfilov was born in Moscow in 1989 and took up the piano at age six. He studied at Moscow's famed Gnessin Music School and then went on to the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where his teacher was Andrei Diev. Panfilov moved to England when he won a full scholarship at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music, where he studied with Graham Scott. He rounded out his training at the Music University of Vienna. Panfilov has played some of the world's top venues as a recitalist, including New York's Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Vienna Musikverein. His concerto appearances have included those with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Manchester Camerata, and the Arctic Philharmonic in Tromsø, Norway, where he won the Top of the World International Piano Competition. He is also the winner of competitions in Britain, Italy, and Spain (the Jaén Prize). Panfilov has been heard on broadcasts of the BBC 3 and Classic FM networks in Britain, as well as on National Television of Romania and several other national broadcasters. He is an Honorary Associate Artist of the Royal Northern College of Music and a "Yeoman" of London's Musicians' Company, a trade and charity group formerly called the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
Panfilov made his recording debut on the Naxos label in 2018 with an album of music by Debussy, Manuel Seco de Arpe, Mussorgsky, and Albéniz. He followed that up a year later, with The Russian Album, recorded with cellist Christoph Croisé.
