Alex Brown
A Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer, Alex Brown is an adept jazz improviser whose work touches upon post-bop, fusion, Latin, and classical traditions. He first emerged as a member of Paquito D'Rivera's group in the 2000s before making his solo debut with 2010's Pianist. He also released the 2021 trio album The Dark Fire Sessions. Brown has worked on other Grammy-nominated projects with Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, and composer Jeff Scott, the latter of whom he shared a Grammy with for Best Classical Compendium for 2023's Passion for Bach and Coltrane.
Born in 1987, Brown grew up in New York City, where played piano from a young age. After high school, he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory and, later, his Master of Music from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. In 2007, he joined saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera's group, touring and recording several albums, including 2009's Grammy-nominated Jazz-Class. He has also worked on projects with an array of performers, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Cho-Liang Lin, David Sanchez, New York Voices, and Miguel Zenon.
In 2010, Brown made his debut as leader with Pianist, showcasing his stylistically expansive approach to jazz, weaving together Latin, Brazilian choro, and fusion sounds. Along with D'Rivera, it featured contributions by vibist Warren Wolf, trumpeter Vivek Patel, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Eric Doob. More work followed, including a 2016 performance of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with Mexico's Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria led by conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. Brown also collaborated with violinist Haerim Elizabeth Lee on her 2019 album My Time is Now: Inspirations from the Gershwins. Along with performing, he has served as a Visiting Artist in Jazz Studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. In 2019, Brown played on trumpeter Brian Lynch's The Omni-American Book Club, which took home the Grammy Award for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. Another Grammy nomination came his way for his work on Dafnis Prieto's sextet album Transparency.
In 2021, Brown released his second album as a leader, The Dark Fire Sessions, which featured his longtime trio with his brother, bassist Zach Brown, and drummer Eric Doob. More collaborations followed, including writing the string arrangements for Kendrick Scott's composition "Unearthed," featuring the Harlem Quartet. He also collaborated with San Francisco rapper Andre Nickatina on an orchestral hip-hop project and completed large-ensemble commissions for Bobby Broom and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, as well as saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown's Global Big Band. In 2023, he contributed to composer Jeff Scott's album Passion for Bach and Coltrane, which also featured the Harlem Quartet and Imani Winds and took home the Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium. That same year, he was back working with Lefkowitz-Brown, trumpeter Sean Jones, and others on the fusion-influenced single "Mangrove Forest."
