In February 2021, English pioneer David Rodigan took a stand in the Jamaica Observer to criticise the new generation of Jamaican artists' turn away from reggae. From Jada Kingdom to Skillibeng to Alkaline, it is true that many young singers / toasters have embraced hip-hop influences (with what is called dancehall trap), R&B or Afropop. And those who stick with roots reggae are rare. But there are artists like Jaz Elise, protégée of the new-roots godfather, Protoje, who brought her into his crew In.Digg.Nation Collective. Displaying impressive skill on her 2019 hit Fresh an Clean, a modern dancehall duet with the big-voiced Govana, she has released a debut album that leans towards nu-soul and R&B, with tracks like the punch-drunk Elevated, Radio or the final acoustic ballad Breathe. But there is also reggae here, with Straying and Good Over Evil, produced by Protoje and Natural High, taking us back to the 70's, when soul fever had seized Kingston. With this very promising first record, Jaz Elise proves that art can be cross-pollinated without being distorted. © Smaël Bouaici / Qobuz
