Ihrem vielbeachteten, selbstbetitelten Debütalbum von 2013 lässt die englische Indie-Band The 1975 drei Jahre später ein Album folgen, dessen Titel alleine schon zeigt, wie ausufernd die Platte geraten ist: I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It. In knapp 74 Minuten Lauflänge vermischt die Band hier 17 Songs lang alle stilistischen Fäden, die sich schon auf dem Debüt finden ließen: synthlastige New-Wave-Sounds, energiegeladener Dance-Rock, atmosphärische Balladen. Diesmal werden aber noch mehr Achtziger-Referenzen eingeworfen ("Paris" erinnert an Fleetwood Mac, "She's American" könnte von Prince stammen), mitunter ist ein R&B-Vibe zu spüren (vor allem auf dem langsamen "If I Believe You", das mit einem Gastauftritt des Jazztrompeters Roy Hargrove aufwartet). Damit ist die Platte ein überbordendes Popwerk, das mit theatralischer Ambition spannend bleibt.
