Am Tag der Präsidentschaftswahlen in den USA im Jahre 2020 träumte (der in Alabama geborene) Jason Isbell davon, dass sein geliebter Bundesstaat Georgia ins demokratische Lager überwechseln würde. „Dabei kam mir die Idee, ein Album mit Songs über Georgia einzuspielen und die Einnahmen dann an eine der dortigen Wohlfahrtsorganisationen zu überweisen“, erläutert dieser Meister des Americana. „Ich gebe zu, von der Motivation her etwas egoistisch gewesen zu sein. Denn ich habe nämlich jahrelang nach einer Ausrede gesucht, um diese Songs mit meiner Gruppe und ein paar Freunden einspielen zu können“. Herausgekommen ist dabei ein bewusst bunt zusammengewürfeltes Tracklisting, und es hätte noch eindeutiger in diese Richtung gehen können („Ich hätte liebend gerne OutKast und 2 Chainz gecovert, aber dabei wäre nichts besonders Gutes herausgekommen…“).
Bei Georgia Blue hat sich Jason Isbell also mit seiner Band The 400 Unit auf das konzentriert, was sie am besten können. Rock, Country Rock, Blues, Rhythm’n’Blues und Soul. Da läuft man Werken von Cat Power, Precious Bryant, James Brown, Black Crowes, Gladys Knight, Drivin N Cryin, Otis Redding, Indigo Girls und R.E.M. über den Weg, alle gecovert mit Unterstützung von Freunden, und es fängt an mit Béla Fleck, geht weiter mit Brittney Spencer, Adia Victoria, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker, Chris Thile, Steve Gorman, Peter Levin sowie John Paul White und reicht hin bis zu Amanda Shires.
