Sie ist so viel mehr als das berühmte "Girl From Ipanema" an der Seite des berühmten brasilianischen Musikers João Gilberto, den sie 1959 heiratet und dem sie 1963 in die Vereinigten Staaten folgt: Astrud Gilberto, die Sängerin mit der stets distanziert wirkenden weichen wie warmer Stimme, hat eine lange und vielfältige musikalische Laufbahn hingelegt, in der sie spielend leicht Genres wechselt.
Ihr erstes eigenes Album mit dem selbstbewussten Namen "The Astrud Gilberto Album" erscheint ein Jahr nach der Trennung von Gilberto. Darauf und auch später singt sie meist Fremdkompositionen, ab "Now" im Jahre 1972 schreibt sie auch eigene Songs.
Ein Album aus ihrer langen Diskografie, das wie ein Amalgam ihrer Ausstrahlung und Lässigkeit strahlt, ist "Beach Samba" aus dem Jahr 1967, erschienen auf dem legendären Verve-Label, das bereits großen weiblichen Stimmen wie Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone oder Sarah Vaughan eine künstlerische Heimat im Bereich des Jazz gab. Astrud Gilberto bewegt sich ebenfalls mit Leichtigkeit in jazzigen Arrangements, doch ihre Songs haben darüber hinaus eine unverkennbare Mischung, die auf "Beach Samba" in strahlender Sixties-Schönheit eine elegante, entrückte wie entspannte Zeitlosigkeit entfalten.
Mit dem Titelsong "Beach Samba" und dem Schlusstrack "Não Bate O Coração" gibt Gilberto nur mit ein paar gesummten wortlosen Akzenten den instrumental fließenden Melodien, gewebt aus fluffigem brasilianischem Bossa Nova und poppig leichten Arrangements, eine verwirbelte traumhafte Atmosphäre – in der die luftigen wie lässigen Songs ein durchaus variables Gesamtbild zeichnen.
Das auf Portugiesisch vorgetragene "Canoeiro" mit seinem schnellen und schlängelnden Rhythmus wird abgelöst von der Ballroom-Ballade "I Had The Craziest Dream" und der Opener "Stay" mit seiner flirrenden Instrumentierung zieht einen bereits hypnotisch in das Album. An diesem so schlafwandlerischen wie ätherischen Stil haben sich seit Gilberto viele versucht, und ihr Einfluss auf moderne (Indie-)Popmusik ist groß, er ist beispielsweise spürbar in den Werken von Beach House, Lana Del Rey, Stereolab oder Sade.
Die sprichwörtliche 'Summertime Sadness' ist bei Astrud Gilberto in jedem Ton ihrer unverkennbaren Stimme geradezu körperlich spürbar. Das Album versetzt den Zuhörer zugleich in eine fröhliche wie melancholische Stimmung, eine Extraportion Nostalgie inklusive – and each one goes, 'Ah'.
