Das zweite Soloalbum von Brian May, Another World (1998), begann eigentlich als Cover-Platte – May wollte Lieblingsstücke von Lieblingsmusikern spielen, aber das Projekt wuchs dann zum richtigen Soloalbum heran. So sind noch Coverversionen z.B. von Jimi Hendrix ("One Rainy Wish") und Ian Hunter ("All the Way from Memphis") enthalten, andere Cover erschienen als B-Seiten und Bonustracks. Aber der Großteil des Albums setzt auf eingängigen wie auch etwas exzentrischen Hardrock, wie May ihn mit seiner Hauptband Queen pflegte – zum Beispiel auf der Single "Business" oder den bombastischen Tracks "China Belle" und "The Guv'nor" (mit Gast-Gitarrist Jeff Beck). Daneben experimentiert er mit Science-Fiction-Metal ("Cyborg") und wirft auch einige Balladen in den Topf ("Why Don't We Try Again", "Wilderness").
