Continuant de s'éloigner de l'intensité et de la radicalité de Pornography (1982) au profit d'une formule toujours plus pop quoique toujours aussi idiosyncratique, The Head on the Door succède aux très psychédéliques Japanese Whispers (1983) et The Top (1984), voyant les Cure creuser encore et toujours la psyché sombre de leur leader Robert Smith au fil de dix nouveaux titres contenant quelques classiques instantanés à l'instar des entraînants "Close to Me" et "In Between Days" ou encore d'un "A Night Like This" préfigurant aux côtés de "Push" ou "Sinking" le classicisme pop d'une partie du successeur Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me de 1987. Constituant ainsi ce qui peut être considéré comme le premier album pop des Anglais, The Head on the Door continue en outre d'affirmer la transition du minimalisme de leurs débuts vers les arrangements plus touffus de leurs futurs travaux comme Disintegration (1989).
