Pour souffler leurs 40 bougies entre potes, les Cure n’ont pas privatisé un petit pub de Crawley dans le Sussex d’où ils sont originaires, mais plus simplement… Hyde Park ! Lieu mythique pour groupe mythique. La captation de ce concert londonien du 7 juillet 2018 devant 65 000 personnes permet surtout de rappeler que Robert Smith et les siens restent les éternels dépositaires d’un style, d’un son, d’un imaginaire, d’une écriture et d’une ambiance uniques. Quelques mois avant de fêter ses 60 ans, le mascara, le rouge à lèvres et la coupe en pétard n’ont pas pris une ride, et le leader de Cure n’a jamais aussi bien chanté. En voyageant à travers quatre décennies de tubes, tantôt cold wave au possible mais majoritairement très pop, on réalise l’ampleur de l’œuvre ; les mélodies entrées dans l’inconscient collectif comme la capacité de Robert Smith à aller à l’essentiel. Avec le vieux complice Simon Gallup (basse), Reeves Gabrels (guitares), Roger O'Donnell (claviers) et Jason Cooper (batterie), il signe de belles versions jamais trop bodybuildées de Pictures of You, In Between Days, Just Like Heaven, A Forest, Disintegration, Lullaby, The Caterpillar, Friday I’m in Love, Close to Me, Boys Don’t Cry, 10:15 Saturday Night et autre Killing an Arab. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
