This is the third and thus far final volume in a sampler series picking out some of the highpoints of Count Basie's 1939-42 period on Columbia. Lester Young's departure in December 1940 robbed the orchestra of their top soloist but the band still outswung all of its competitors and the personnel was consistently outstanding. Coleman Hawkins's guest appearance on "9:20 Special" and "Feedin' the Bean" round out this enjoyable set, but when is Columbia going to reissue all of their Count Basie recordings instead of always recycling the same ones?
