Si le saxophoniste Marcus Strickland fait plus songer à un philosophe qu’à un musicien lorsqu’il évoque cet étonnant Nihil Novi (rien de nouveau en latin), sa musique vise tout autant le cœur que l’esprit, voire même le corps, histoire d’entamer une petite danse… Produit par Meshell Ndegeocello qui dépose aussi ça-et-là quelques lignes de sa basse, le premier album pour BlueNote/Revive du saxophoniste emprunte aux styles musicaux les plus divers, s’inspirant tant du défunt producteur hip-hop J Dilla que de l’afrobeat de Fela, de la musique de Mingus voire de celle de Bartók ! Avec son groupe Twi-Life qui comprend le trompettiste Keyon Harrold, le bassiste Kyle Miles, le batteur Charles Haynes, l’organiste Mitch Henry et le pianiste Masayuki Hirano, Strickland a convié quelques pointures parmi lesquelles le grand Robert Galsper ! A l’arrivée, il signe un beau disque on ne peut plus protéiforme slalomant entre jazz, soul, funk et rhythm’n’blues tout au long duquel son sax félin fait de vraie merveille mélodique. © CM/Qobuz
