D'emblée, les guitares abrasives et le rythme au marteau-piqueur de Frenzy, premier morceau de ce 19e album d'Iggy Pop, rappellent le bon vieux des Stooges. À 75 ans, est-ce bien raisonnable ? Heureusement, l'album n'est pas le monolithe sonique que laissait présager Frenzy. Avec son piano joué à un doigt et ses riffs de guitares couinants, Modern Day Rip sonne comme un second hommage réussi aux Stooges. Mais d'autres morceaux calment le jeu et le rendent plus palpitant, plus contrasté. Il y en aura pour tous les goûts : de l'Iggy proto-punk donc, mais aussi de l'Iggy new wave à synthés (Comments), de l'Iggy crooner façon Sinatrash (New Atlantis), un interlude de faux jazz cheap (The News for Andy), un morceau avec pedal-steel presque country (Morning Show) et partout de l'Iggy pop, tout simplement pop, avec des mélodies emballantes et des chansons qui donnent envie de taper du pied en bougeant la tête dans tous les sens. Sur l'ironique et caricatural Neo Punk, Iggy Pop taille les faux punks embourgeoisés. Il peut se le permettre : lui seul aujourd'hui incarne le début et la pérennité du rock authentique. Il en est le messie historique, entouré d'apôtres à gros bras : des membres et ex-membres des Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink 182, Guns N' Roses, Foo Fighters et Jane's Addiction, qui connaissent la musique et savent faire groover le rock'n'roll. Cet Every Loser beau comme un juke-box n'est peut-être pas aussi réussi que Post Pop Depression, son implacable retour au rock de 2016 avec les Queens Of The Stone Age, mais c'est quand même une efficace et réjouissante célébration des joies simples du rock'n'roll. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
