Il y a tout de même un mystère D’Angelo. Comment un tel talent qui secoua la planète soul en 1995 avec son premier album Brown Sugar puis avec sa suite, Voodoo en 2000, se soit contenté d’une carrière aussi… chaotique ? Car Black Messiah qui parait quelques jours avant Noël 2014, n’est finalement QUE le troisième album studio de D’Angelo en vingt ans de carrière ! Mais cette attente de quatorze années aura d’une certaine manière valu le coup tant le niveau de ce Messie noir est élevé. On retrouve déjà cette voix furieusement sensuelle (pour ne pas dire sexuelle), et cette façon unique de l’enrouler autour d’un groove entêtant. Il y a évidemment du charnel, du sale et du vrai dans cette soul héritée de Sly Stone et Al Green. Pas d’enluminures superflues ou de sons gratuitement léchés. Bref, un comeback soulful et réussi. A noter que Black Messiah, co-produit par Questlove des Roots, accueille quelques goûtus invités parmi lesquels Q-Tip, le bassiste Pino Palladino, le batteur James Gadson et l’ex-Parliament/Funkadelic Kendra Foster. © MD/Qobuz
