Glass and Reich are household names, but not so William Duckworth, who was devising features of what became post-minimalism well before those more famous composers explored them. Duckworth's breakthrough work was the Time Curve Preludes, of which he wrote two books; the first is recorded here by pianist Emanuele Arciuli. The set has been recorded just a few times before, and the little Simple Songs About Sex and War, to texts by Hayden Carruth, here receive their world premieres. These are charming, sung by Costanza Savarese in a kind of mod-girl voice that reflects their pop influence. The Time Curve Preludes are also very strong. Arciuli gets the structure of the set: it is not only the individual pieces that stretch the minimalist model but also the variation from one short piece to another, and the pianist makes this clear. In the range of minimalist piano performances from strict to hazy, he tends toward the latter end, but there is always a sense of control. Listeners interested in the minimalist tradition may find this an important release, even essential for those who haven't encountered Duckworth before.
