Death Cab For Cuties achtes Album, Kintsugi, hob die mehrfachen Brüche in der Band hervor. Gitarrist Chris Walla verließ seinen Arbeitgeber und Ben Gibbards Ehe brach zusammen. Zwei Umstände, die eine schwere und negative Atmosphäre auf dem Band erzeugten, was zu einem interessanten, aber ziemlich düsteren Album führte. Drei Jahre später scheint die Depression endgültig vorbei zu sein. Thank You for Today präsentiert mehrere fröhliche Aspekte und bringt langjährige Teamkollegen zusammen: Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr und die zwei Studio-Partner Dave Depper und Zac Rae. Wie bei Kintsugi wurde das Album von dem talentierten Rich Costey produziert und gemixt, der bereits Muse, Franz Ferdinand und Fiona Apple unter die Arme griff. Ein solider Hintergrund, der vom ersten Hören an zu spüren ist.
Die graue Phase von Death Cab For Cutie scheint vorbei zu sein. Platz für Optimismus in stiller Rebellion. Mit I Dreamt We Spoke Again beginnt die Band mit einer Reihe von Verzerrungen, die Gibbards Stimme im Retro-Stil überlagern. Dann kommt natürlich der Titel, der für den neuen Geisteszustand der Band am repräsentativsten ist: Gold Rush (was an Screamadelica von Primal Scream erinnert) leiht sich seine melodische Linie von Yoko Onos Mind Train aus. Poppiger, eingängiger und luftiger als vorher bricht Death Cab For Cutie keine Elemente mehr wie bei Kintsugi.
