Verglichen mit dem Vorgängeralbum McCartney ist Paul McCartneys zweites Soloalbum Ram – das als Zusammenarbeit mit seiner Frau Linda unter beider Namen erschien – eine Platte mit mehr Tiefgang und Studioarbeit, aber es hat dennoch viel vom hausgemachten Charme, den auch das erste Album auszeichnete. Ram, das je zur Hälfte aus einfachen Pop-Rock-Nummern und aus clever konstruierten Mini-Suiten wie "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" und "Back Seat of My Car" besteht, wird insgesamt nie zu einem großen Statement, aber die Platte unternimmt viele angenehme Schlenker. Zu seiner Veröffentlichung (und auch viele Jahre danach noch) war Ram Zielscheibe für Hohn und Spott, aber rückblickend betrachtet wirkt es fast wie das erste Indie-Pop-Album – eine Platte, die kleine Freuden mit großen Melodien feiert, und eine arglose Platte, die sich nicht dafür schämt, kitschig zu sein.
