Text in englischer Sprache verfügbar

A Junior Walker-style mix for The Everything Man, Jimmy Castor abandoned Bertha Butt and Luther & the Troglodytes for a smooth urban/adult contemporary album of seven instrumentals and four tunes with vocals. There are a couple of band originals mixed in with covers spanning the pop galaxy -- written by Redbone's Lolly Vegas, Lou Reed, Stevie Wonder, Thom Bell, and David White of the obscure Crystal Mansion -- that gives the group a chance to explore all sorts of melodic structure. Redbone's "Maggie" gets a wonderful instrumental take, and someone finally found a way to do a clean version of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" without censoring the rock & roll animal -- just leave all the lyrics off the disc. Castor has a good voice, and though "Heaven Kissed" and "Goodbye My Lover" are decent, it's the wailing sax on "Love Train" which makes more of an impact. There is a nice version of the Crystal Mansion near-hit, "The Thought of Loving You," an amazing song which even the Manhattan Transfer embraced. The Jimmy Castor Bunch's soulful arrangement, courtesy of Gerry Thomas, adds elegance, and Castor's vocal stays true to Dave White Tricker's innocence on the original. The funky title track works well, but the band lays back a bit too much, the emphasis going to Jimmy Castor's sax. Sometimes, "the bunch" frustrates because you know they are capable of exploding but opt for playing it safe. The result is a very good album of excellent songs which could have been much more if they had just taken a few risks.
