Der Regen an Bowie-Remaster plätschert weiter! Dieses Box-Set bietet uns eine Zeitreise ins Jahr 1971, um die 12 Monate vor der Veröffentlichung von Hunky Dory, seinem vierten Studioalbum, zu erforschen. Der Engländer hatte gerade die Tournee zu The Man Who Sold the World beendet und stürzte sich sofort wieder in die Komposition, ohne jemals seine Inspiration zu verlieren. Das Niveau des Albums ist übrigens aus der Sicht des 21. Jahrhunderts erstaunlich hoch. Verantwortlich dafür sind die beiden Kult Singles Changes und Life on Mars?, der Hommage an Dylan, Warhol und Lou Reed - auf Queen Bitch und seiner Stooges-artigen Gitarre -, ohne Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks oder Quicksand zu vergessen. Letztere wurden von den Medien weniger gefeiert, waren aber ebenso gut gelungen. Diese Retrospektive eines Bowies auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Kunst  - oder fast, wenn man bedenkt, dass Ziggy Stardust ein Jahr später erschien - lässt sich wie vier Säle eines Museums besichtigen …

Auf der ersten CD sind etwa 15 Demos des Albums zu hören: mit Gitarrensoli, Klavier oder in der Gruppe, die Bowies kraftvolles Songwriting vermittelt, das keine speziellen Tricks benötigte, um die Herzen seiner Fans zu berühren oder den Dancefloor zu rocken, wie es diese im Sound so klare Version von Queen Bitch beweist. Mit demselben Song in einer leichten Downtempo-Version wird auch CD 2 eröffnet, die wie CD 3 eine Reihe von Live-Auftritten enthält, die unter anderem in der BBC-Show John Peel in Concert aufgeführt wurden. Weitere Kompositionen sind Hunky Dory, aber auch Songs wie The Supermen aus The Man Who Sold the World oder eine hübsche Version von Space Oddity, die im September 1971 im berühmten Club Friars in Aylesbury im Nordwesten Londons mit einer 12-Saiter und einem scherzenden Bowie aufgenommen wurde. Auch die späteren Spiders From Mars, Mick Ronson (Gitarre), Trevor Bolder (Bass) und Woody Woodmansey (Schlagzeug) waren hier am Start.

Das Konzert endet mit einer neuen Version von Lou Reeds Hit Waiting for the Man, dessen Einfluss in jedem Winkel dieser Retrospektive herumgeistert. CD 4 stammt schließlich von Ken Scott, der Hunky Dory mit Bowie ko-produziert hatte - hier als "The Actor (aka David Bowie)" aufgeführt. Die CD bietet einige frühere und alternative Mixe und vor allem saubere Remaster-Versionen, um diese große Rundfahrt der Erinnerungen an den Thin White Duke abzuschließen. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Der Regen an Bowie-Remaster plätschert weiter! Dieses Box-Set bietet uns eine Zeitreise ins Jahr 1971, um die 12 Monate vor der Veröffentlichung von Hunky Dory, seinem vierten Studioalbum, zu erforschen. Der Engländer hatte gerade die Tournee zu The Man Who Sold the World beendet und stürzte sich sofort wieder in die Komposition, ohne jemals seine Inspiration zu verlieren. Das Niveau des Albums ist übrigens aus der Sicht des 21. Jahrhunderts erstaunlich hoch. Verantwortlich dafür sind die beiden Kult Singles Changes und Life on Mars?, der Hommage an Dylan, Warhol und Lou Reed - auf Queen Bitch und seiner Stooges-artigen Gitarre -, ohne Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks oder Quicksand zu vergessen. Letztere wurden von den Medien weniger gefeiert, waren aber ebenso gut gelungen. Diese Retrospektive eines Bowies auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Kunst  - oder fast, wenn man bedenkt, dass Ziggy Stardust ein Jahr später erschien - lässt sich wie vier Säle eines Museums besichtigen …

Auf der ersten CD sind etwa 15 Demos des Albums zu hören: mit Gitarrensoli, Klavier oder in der Gruppe, die Bowies kraftvolles Songwriting vermittelt, das keine speziellen Tricks benötigte, um die Herzen seiner Fans zu berühren oder den Dancefloor zu rocken, wie es diese im Sound so klare Version von Queen Bitch beweist. Mit demselben Song in einer leichten Downtempo-Version wird auch CD 2 eröffnet, die wie CD 3 eine Reihe von Live-Auftritten enthält, die unter anderem in der BBC-Show John Peel in Concert aufgeführt wurden. Weitere Kompositionen sind Hunky Dory, aber auch Songs wie The Supermen aus The Man Who Sold the World oder eine hübsche Version von Space Oddity, die im September 1971 im berühmten Club Friars in Aylesbury im Nordwesten Londons mit einer 12-Saiter und einem scherzenden Bowie aufgenommen wurde. Auch die späteren Spiders From Mars, Mick Ronson (Gitarre), Trevor Bolder (Bass) und Woody Woodmansey (Schlagzeug) waren hier am Start.

Das Konzert endet mit einer neuen Version von Lou Reeds Hit Waiting for the Man, dessen Einfluss in jedem Winkel dieser Retrospektive herumgeistert. CD 4 stammt schließlich von Ken Scott, der Hunky Dory mit Bowie ko-produziert hatte - hier als "The Actor (aka David Bowie)" aufgeführt. Die CD bietet einige frühere und alternative Mixe und vor allem saubere Remaster-Versionen, um diese große Rundfahrt der Erinnerungen an den Thin White Duke abzuschließen. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
