Dan Smith, Frontmann und Begründer von Bastille, baute das eigentliche Soloprojekt relativ rasch zur Alternative-Band aus. Zuvor bereits bekannt geworden durch eigene Musikveröffentlichungen in Form von Internetvideos, präsentierte die vierköpfige Band 2013 ihr Debütalbum Bad Blood. Die Liebe zur Kunst in Form bewegter Bilder zeigt sich nicht nur in den selbstgedrehten Videos (z.B. jenes zu "Flaws/Icarus") und musikalischen Anleihen an Filmmusik, sondern auch in den einschlägigen Zitaten in den Songs (beispielsweise "Laura Palmer", in Anspielung an die Serie Twin Peaks). Gekleidet sind die zwölf Stücke in einen Popmantel, der von einem aus Synthesizern und schnellen Beats bestehenden Gerüst gehalten wird. Aufgelockert sind die Tracks oft durch Ethno-Klänge ("Pompeii"), die sich mit Chören abwechseln.
