Sonia
Liverpool singer Sonia Evans initially rose to fame as part of the Stock, Aitkin and Waterman stable, the phenomenally successful song writing trio known as The Hit Factory. Evans had pitched Waterman after meeting him outside his studio and he agreed to give her an audition. Her debut single 'You'll Never Stop Me Loving You' was a typical Hit Factory product - light, bubbly synth pop with a catchy hook. Released in June 1989 whilst Sonia was still eighteen years old, it went to number one in the UK Charts making her one of the youngest UK female recording artists to reach the top. An album followed in 1990, peaking at number seven in the UK and generated five hit singles. Behind the scenes a rift developed between artist and songwriters prompting her leave her record label Chrysalis and release the follow up album 'Sonia' on IQ Records in 1991. The single 'Only Fools (Never Fall in Love)' became her third UK top ten hit. In 1993 she was chosen to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest achieving a creditable second place. Unfortunately her audience appeal was beginning to fade and her 1995 release 'Wake Up Everybody' scraped into the UK Singles Chart at number 155. Although her recording career ended in 1990 she continues to make sporadic live appearances and stars in the occasional pantomime.
