Als vor über einem Jahr die erste Single "Georgia" - als eine Art Twee-Miniatur eines My Bloody Valentine-Songs - beim Label Transparent erschien, waren die amerikanischen Indie-Blogs in heller Aufregung. Das Debüt von The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart und "When I'm With You" von Best Coast lagen einem noch in den Ohren, da folgten mit Yuck schon die nächsten Newcomer, die den fiepig-melodiösen Indie-Rock der 90er Jahre mit all seiner Nonchalance in krachige, catchy Popmusik übersetzen.
Hört man nun das Album der Band aus London, das zum Glück nicht mehr nur als Import zu haben ist, weiß man im ersten Moment gar nicht, an welche alten Zeiten und Indie-Helden man zuerst denken soll. Schon "Get Away" klingt mit rohem Bass und jaulender Sologitarre nach Dinosaur Jrs "Freak Scene". "Trying to make it through the wall / You can see me if you're tall / looking over", jault auch Sänger Daniel Blumberg im herrlich verrauschten "The Wall".
Dass Yuck sich in so manchem Song wie eine rumpelige Garagenband auf Vierspurrekorder anhören, zeigt, dass hier neben stilsicherer Teenager-Nostalgie auch eine ganze Portion Hipster-Feedback-Attitüde im Spiel ist. Die Songs sind jedoch viel zu stark, um sich über so etwas auch nur eine Sekunde lang aufzuregen.
Was vielmehr zählt ist, dass der Gitarren-Pop von "Shook Down" abgehalfterte Typen wie Evan Dando vor Augen führt, dass ihre erbärmlichen Auftritte kein Schwein mehr braucht. Und dass Teenage Fanclub oder Yo La Tengo beim Hören des harmonischen Geschrammels von "Holing Out" und "Sunday" altersmilde schmunzeln dürften.
"Suck" wiederum riecht verdächtig nach dem Slackertum von Pavement, "Stutter" zitiert britischen Twee-Pop und "Operation" ist eine ganz tiefe Verbeugung vor dem Songwriting von Thurston Moore und seinen Noise-Heroen Sonic Youth. In der Tat, dieses wunderbare Album hat rein gar nichts Neues anzubieten. Dennoch haben Yuck keinen Guttenberg gebaut. Bei uns nennt man so etwas ein Mixtape.
