WHAT'S HIS NAME is the second album by the Swales. Following the release of PLEASURELAND in 1992, the band underwent a complete lineup change around leader Bob Carr. However, Carr's uniquely original songs, coupled with Gene Holder's sympathetic production, draw little attention to the change. Carr's sturdy songs tend to depict a range of proud and simple protagonists, who hope for an improvement in the state of their lives while going about living a working life. They're the same sort of characters who inhabit songs by Bruce Springsteen, though Carr eschews any sort of mythologizing, instead using a reporter's eye filtered through a poet's heart. He comes up with lyrics that run the gamut from novel wordplay to deadpan maudlin. This is a tight, guitar-driven band that shows country leanings. "On Your Side" appeared on the band's previous album, and is here re-recorded, revealing the growth the band has undergone.
