Die Songs auf ihrem dritten Album The Who Sell Out, erschienen im Dezember 1967, gehören zum Besten, was die Band aufgenommen hat - darunter die Acid-Rock-Nummer "I Can See for Miles" (ein Top-Ten-Hit für die Gruppe) oder die psychedelisch angehauchten "Armenia City in the Sky" und "Relax". Mit "Tattoo" und der Akustiknummer "Sunrise" zeigte Pete Townshend eine verletzlichere Seite als zuvor, mit der Mini-Oper "Rael" nahmen sie Motive des nächsten Albums Tommy vorweg. Daneben gibt es auch Comedy - neben dem Song "Odorono" tauchen zwischen den Tracks falsche Werbespots und Jingles auf, weil Townshend ein Konzeptalbum als Tribut an Piratenradiosender vorschwebte.
